Abstract
In this short chapter we present the elementary part of one of the most elegant theories in differential topology, René Thorn’s theory of cobordism. It was largely for this work that Thorn was awarded the Fields Medal in 1958.
... the theory of “Cobordisme” which has, within the few years of its existence, led to the most penetrating insights into the topology of differentiable manifolds.
H. Hopf, International Congress of Mathematicians, 1958
Mathematicians are like Frenchmen : whatever you say to them they translate into their own language and forthwith it is something completely different.
