Effect of Age and the Milk Sugar Lactose on Calcium Absorption by the Small Intestine

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 249))

Abstract

There is a marked decrease in the capacity of the small intestine to absorb Ca with age. Older adults also tend to consume diets with less than the recommended daily amount of Ca. This combination of decreased absorption of Ca and decreased intake of dietary Ca may contribute to the decrease in bone mass seen in the elderly. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanisms responsible for the decrease in intestinal Ca absorption with age. Knowledge of the mechanisms involved may suggest ways of improving Ca absorption and utilization in the elderly.
