Abstract

At present a fair number of studies exist (particularly in English) concerning the development of language among mentally handicapped children and adolescents, be they mental defectives, moderately retarded, severely retarded or deeply retarded (Rondai 1975; Lambert & Rondai, 1980a). One of the most fundamental questions in this domain is that of knowing whether mentally retarded subjects acquire language in the same way as can be observed in a normally intelligent child or whether they go about it in a different way, and if so, how?
