Abstract

NZB × SJL F1 female (NSF) mice develop a dramatic hypertrophy of the thymus during aging, which provides a unique model of sex-dependent thymic pathology (1). The present report summarizes a series of studies intended at examining the significance of this phenomenon. In order to determine the cellular events underlying the thymic hypertrophy, we combined histological observations by light and electron microscopy with the phenotypic characterization of dissociated thymic cells using flow cytofluorometry (FCF) (2). Furthermore, we undertook homing experiments with radioactively labeled cells as an attempt to investigate the possibility that abnormalities of lymphocyte ecotaxis (3) might be associated with the aberrant behavior of the NSF thymus.
