Abstract

The regulatory role of the thymus in the differentiation process of T lymphocytes has been well accepted (1,2). Functional distinct subclasses of T lymphocytes differentiate within the thymic compartment. These cells can be identified by virtue of the expression of Lyt antigens. Thus, T helper and T amplifier cells carry the Lyt-1+, 2-, 3+ phenotype (Lyt-1+ cells), whereas suppressor and cytotoxic T cells carry the Lyt-1-, 2+, 3+ phenotype (Lyt-2,3+ cells). Cantor and Boyse (3) have provided evidence that these cells originate from a precursor cell expressing the Lyt-1+, 2+, 3+ phenotype (Lyt-123+ cells).
