Summary

Evidence for the suggested role of the immune system in epimorphic regeneration was sought by assessing effects on regeneration of immunological agents or active cellular immunity (allograft rejection) and by comparing immunological expression (e.g. mitogen responsiveness of splenocytes and interleukin 2 distribution) during regeneration with that following nonamputational trauma. There appeared to be no significant participation of humoral immunity in either epimorphic regeneration or repair of nonamputational wounds. However, expression of cellular immunity during regeneration differed from that observed during repair of nonamputational wounds. Moreover, expression of cellular immunity following amputation appeared to affect the progress of regeneration. This suggests that the nature of wounds can modulate expression of cellular immunity which, in turn, can affect mechanisms of wound repair, e.g. epimorphic regeneration vs fibroplasia and fibrosis.
