Summary
The interest in the nervous control of limb regeneration in the Amphibia stems from the original finding of Todd in 1823. This research done at Naples in 1823 was largely unsupported for 100 years. The present paper speculates on the reason for Todd’s experiment against the background of arguments of the day on the neurotrophic activity of the nervous system, derangements of which were believed to cause all the diseases of the body (Cullen, 1776; see Rath, 1959). This paper also touches on modern developments in the study of nervous control of regeneration, all of which stem from Todd’s original findings.
