Abstract
The influence of hadronic interactions on precision tests of the electroweak theory is investigated: (i) In O(α 2) the total cross section is affected by initial state radiation not only of photons but also of hadrons. (ii) Hadronic interactions influence the contribution of heavy quarks to the vacuum polarizations of γ, Z and W. (iii) QCD corrections reduce the forward backward asymmetry of heavy quarks. (iv) The O(α 2s ) correction of the Z decay rate differs from the correction to R calculated for the photon induced reaction at lower energies. It will be shown that these corrections all have to be included in precision tests of the Standard model. Their magnitude is sufficiently well under control not to endanger the interpretation of these measurements in the forseeable future.
