Abstract

The fimbrial adhesins K99 and 987P are produced by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains that provoke neonatal diarrhea in calves and piglets. The biosynthesis of these fimbriae is affected by environmental conditions. Optimal production is achieved at 37°C and high specific growth rate (μ). At lower temperatures or lower specific growth rates the production of fimbriae per unit of biomass rapidly decreases (9). In this study a combination of physiological and genetical approaches was used to elucidate the mechanisms of regulation of fimbriae expression.
