Abstract
The objective of this article is to review the technical and economic status of large wind turbine systems which are nearing the stage of readiness for commercial operation. Owing to the comprehensive nature of this subject, an article of this length does not permit the elaboration required for in-depth coverage of both theory and results. Consequently, theoretical coverage will be provided only to the extent necessary to provide background to the subject of large wind turbines.
Dr. James I. Lerner was educated at M.I.T., where he received a B.S. degree, and at Stanford where he received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering. From 1975 to 1981 he was senior technical advisor at the California Energy Commission, where he established and managed the California Wind Energy Program. In 1981 he established a full-time wind energy consulting practice. One of his clients, the City of Fairfield, is planning a 100 megawatt wind farm project with construction to commence in 1984 and full-scale operation in late 1985.
