Effect of Deep Peroneal Nerve Stimulation on the Carotid Chemoreceptor Afferent Discharges in Rabbits

Abstract

Our previous studies (Che Ming-xin and Su Qing-fen, 1988) have shown that deep peroneal nerve (DPN) stimulation may have a modulatory effect on rabbit carotid chemoreceptor pressor response depending on the functional state of the central cardiovascular activity which is related to vagus input, PaCO2, and the depth of anaesthesia. However, the effect of DPN stimulation on the carotid chemoreceptor is less understood. There has been a report (Biscoe and Purves, 1967) showing that passive movement of hind-limb could increase cat carotid chemoreceptor activity. Therefore, it is of interest to examine whether DPN stimulation could enhance carotid chemoreceptor activity (CCA) in the rabbit.
