Abstract
Studies on experimental ischemia and compression of peripheral nerves are reviewed. It is concluded that any trauma to a nerve trunk may induce microvascular injury in the nerve. A slight trauma may cause epineurial micro-bleedings, oedema, etc. Severe trauma, e.g., prolonged experimental tourniquet ischemia or compression, involves injury to endoneurial capillaries (blood-nerve barrier) leading to intrafascicular oedema. The establishment of post-ischemic or post-traumatic interfascicular oedema coincides in time with severe disturbances in nerve function.
