Abstract

This paper is a report on examinations of the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin in subjects with diabetes mellitus, with hyperlipoproteinemia and in smokers, indicating the presence of a fluctuating disorder in the oxygen unloading from the erythrocytes in these conditions known as cardiovascular risk factors. Since these states may also be associated with an impairment in microcirculatory flow, the synergistic effects of these factors may lead to serious consequences for the oxygenation of tissues, particularly in those with a poor microcirculation as in the arterial walls.
