Abstract

Recent studies concerning the O2-supply of the myocardium do not yet show a uniform picture. According to PO2 measurements of Schuchhardt (1971) and Whaler, et al (1973) with microelectrodes in the canine and cat heart, the O2 supply of the myocardial fibre at normoxia as well as at hypoxia seems to be kept at an essential minimum. Measurements of the myoglobin-bound oxygen (Coburn et al, 1973) show a mean PO2 value of 6 mmHg in the canine myocardial fibre in normoxia. Under hypoxic conditions, this PO2 value can decrease to around 1 mmHg. In contrast to these experimental findings, theoretical calculations (Thews 1962; Grote and Thews 1962) for the human myocardium predict more favourable conditions in the O2 supply.
