Abstract
A new analytical approximation is used for calculating facilitated diffusion in flat layers. It is applied to oxygen or carbon monoxide diffusion through flat layers containing myoglobin or hemoglobin, where it can be applied to all situations. Calculations for the total gas flux are in good agreement with data from the literature. New calculations for the facilitated diffusion of CO show non-equilibrium facilitation over a wide range of layer thicknesses and CO pressures.
