Abstract
The oxygen supply to the heart is one of the fundamental parameters of the heart function, since cardiac contraction is supported by ATP produced by combustion of substrates, mainly at the mitochondrial level. Cardiac muscle contains myoglobin in cytosol and cytochromes in mitochondria, both of which participate in the respiratory mechanisms of the heart. The present paper describes an optical approach to myocardial energy metabolism with the intention of detecting the absorption changes of myoglobin during a single contraction-relaxation cycle.
