Introduction to Collective Excitations in Solids

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Science Institute Series ((NSSB,volume 88))

Abstract

The subject of collective excitations in solids is introduced by first considering the effects of time-dependent and time-independent perturbations on a two-level system. Subsequently, the physics of collective excitations is developed. After reviewing the process of absorption and emission of radiation, the interaction of radiation with collective excitations is dealt with. Final emphasis is accorded to examples of collective excitations.
