Abstract

Any time corrosion comes up in casual conversation, people talk about their old cars. Everyone who owns a car over 5-years old has first-hand experience with rusting, along with the bitter knowledge of what it costs in reliability and resale value (see Fig. 1-1). In recent years, automobile manufacturers have faced the problem and have begun to control corrosion by improving design, by sacrificial and inhibiting coatings, and by greater use of plastics.
