Abstract

Our planet Earth revolves around the Sun, 150 million kilometers away. Our Sun is just one of the 100 billions or so stars which swarm across our Galaxy, a vast system with diameter around 100 000 light-years.* Our Galaxy is one of the billion other galaxies which our most powerful telescopes are able to detect in the depths of space, at distances up to several billions light-years.
