Abstract
It is now known that transposons occur ubiquitously in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. A greater variety has been characterised in Drosophila melanogaster than in any other eukaryote, and more is known about selective effects associated with particular transposons. In particular, the dysgenic effects associated with two transposons, the “P factor” and “I factor” have been well documented (Engels, 1989; Finnegan, 1989). In each case, the effects are manifested when strains containing at least one copy of the transposon are crossed to strains which lack any copies.
