Abstract

The theory of characteristic classes of foliations is one of the most brilliant applications of the cohomology of Lie algebras of vector fields. Here we develop only some selected results of this theory. The reader who would like to acquaint himself in more detail with foliations and their characteristic classes is referred to the books by Tamura [88], Lawson [60], and Pittie [73], to Lawson’s survey article [59], and to my own survey articles [19, 21].
