Abstract
Reaction injection molding is a fast “in situ” polymerization process which forms the desired polymer from its monomeric liquids. The process is characterized by the use of high-speed impingement to mix reactive monomers or prepolymers which rapidly polymerize in a heated mold under low pressure. The flow rate of two such reactive monomers, polyol and diisocyanate, must be measured and controlled to provide the proper stoichiometrical ratio for the resulting polyurethane. A schematic diagram of the RIM process is shown in Figure 1.1 The liquid reactant streams which are rapidly mixed in the mixhead are fed into a heated mold through a runner and react to form a solid part.
