Self-Diffusion on Nearly Pure Metallic Surfaces

  • Conference paper
Fundamental Phenomena in the Materials Sciences

Abstract

This paper presents a discussion of the same topic covered by Shewmon,* rather argumentatively, because we often agree on the premises and differ on the conclusions. Fortunately, he has outlined very nicely the background of many of the topics that are discussed here. We shall repeat some of the results of others that he cited and add a few additional ones because it is our purpose to emphasize those things that are in disagreement. It is not our intention to present this topic as a closed case as he did, because we feel that the case is far from closed. Surface self-diffusion mechanisms are discussed first—a topic which Shewmon also considered.
