Modern Theory of Fluid Surface Tension

Abstract

This paper presents a discussion of the spherical interface in fluid systems. The paper by de Bruyn* presented an exposition of the theory of surface tension due to J. W. Gibbs. I should like to emphasize that it is only in the context of that theory that the surface tension of equilibrium systems is properly described. Peculiarly enough, that theory has practically disappeared from the published literature and only a pale imitation of it is to be found now in the texts and treatises.
