The Relationship between Choline Uptake and Acetylcholine Synthesis in a Sympathetic Ganglion

Abstract

Acetylcholine (ACh) synthesis in cholinergic nerve terminals is regulated so that the rate of synthesis is slow when the nerve terminal is at rest and is much accelerated when the nerve terminal is actively releasing neurotransmitter. However, the mechanism by which this control of synthesis rate is exerted is not known with any certainty (see reviews, 23,36). The present work concerns the role played by choline (Ch) delivery into the nerve terminal in this process of ACh synthesis regulation; it is a direct extension of the work reported in the proceedings of the previous meeting (10).
