Abstract

Aging of Cholinergic Synapses: Some Basic Questions

Only a limited amount of information is available about biochemistry and the pharmacology of aging synapses in the nervous system. The majority of data reported in the literature refer to the central nervous system (CNS) and not to the peripheral nervous system. Although there seems to be a general tendency toward a decrease in several neurochemical parameters such as enzyme activity (13,19,43), receptor binding (31), or neurotransmitter levels (cf. 23,26), the results are sometimes contradictory.
