Abstract
With the availability of purified enzymes and enzyme systems, a great variety of C14- and H3-labeled compounds of biological interest can now be prepared with relative ease. The advantages of the use of these biological methods for the synthesis of labeled compounds are obvious when one considers the difficulties involved in preparing a compound through a long series of organic reactions. In addition to the biological procedures which make use of purified enzymes, the rapid advancement in our knowledge of the pathways of intermediary metabolism has suggested additional methods for the preparation of isotopically-labeled compounds of particular interest to the investigators in biochemistry. The problems now are concerned with techniques of isolation and the development of methods of degradation which unequivocally establish the location of the isotope.
