Abstract
Methods of producing refractory carbides are classified. The most widely used methods of carbide production are by synthesis from the elements and by carbothermic reduction of the oxides. The formation of carbides is discussed from the point of view of the electron structure of the metals and carbon composing them, and also from that of a configuration-localization model which is presented.
