Application of ATR to Low-Temperature Studies

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Applied Spectroscopy ((DAIS,volume 7b))

Abstract

The recording of infrared spectra of many organic materials at reduced temperatures often results in more meaningful spectra due to the sharpening of the absorption bands. These effects can be observed both in transmission and ATR spectra. ATR has an advantage however, since spectra can be obtained on many samples opaque to transmission. An apparatus for obtaining ATR curves at temperatures approaching that of liquid nitrogen is described together with typical results.
