Abstract
Cancers of the colon and rectum, breast, lung, prostate, and bladder accounted for more than 50 percent of the new cancers detected during 1974, according to estimates compiled by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland (Table 5). Because of their importance as health hazards, these cancers are the targets of the first five organ site programs established by NCI. The purpose of the programs is the accumulation and application of knowledge needed to prevent the occurrence of specific cancers and to improve the survival rates of persons who do contract them.
