Abstract

The number of complexes covered by the title of this chapter is vast and the spectroscopic literature is too large to be covered comprehensively in the space of a single chapter. We have therefore attempted to outline the main approaches and reasoning in the applications of vibrational spectroscopy (section 6.1.3) and, in the rest of the chapter, to illustrate the use of these approaches with selected examples from the literature. The contents of this latter part of the chapter have been organised according to the chemical species involved rather than according to bonding type as this forms a more natural classification of the subject matter. Some subjects cross the boundaries of our headings, belonging to more specialised classifications in addition to, say, periodic group classifications. Where this occurs more detailed discussion is reserved for the special categories.
