Part of the book series: Physics of Atoms and Molecules ((PAMO))

Abstract

Collisions between free electrons and atoms, molecules, and their ions are a driving mechanism for many processes of great practical importance and scientific interest. In complex excited media, ranging from stellar atmospheres to laser systems, these processes can be analyzed and understood only if the various competing subprocesses are correctly characterized. This book is concerned with quantitative theoretical methods that have helped to elucidate one class of such subprocesses—scattering of electrons by neutral atoms at energies below the ionization threshold.
