Abstract
A shell model calculation including all nonspurious 1hω) excitations and certain nonspurious 3hω) excitations, which according to their SU(4)-SU(3) structure are closely related to the first rotational band of 16O, has been performed to decide whether the lowest negative parity (T=½) states can be of 4p3h structure. From an examination of the dependence of the spectrum on the particle hole energy it is concluded that the lowest negative parity states are of 2plh type while the second 1/2- and higher 3/2- states presumable contain large 4p3h components.
