Structure of the Retinal Membrane Containing the Visual Pigments

  • Chapter
The Visual System

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 24))

Abstract

There is at present considerable interest in the steps in vision which follow immediately upon absorption of light by a molecule of the visual pigment. Any hypothesis as to the molecular events needs to be based on the structure of the membrane containing the pigment. X-ray diffraction analysis is useful in picturing the membrane because the studies are carried out on retina in physiological solution.
