Abstract

The effect of heat treatment and the addition of up to 0.4 wt.% C on the superconducting properties of Nb alloys containing 30 to 70 at.% Ti is studied. By final heat treatment the critical current of the alloys may by substantially increased. After homogenization at 1500° C the critical current in worked samples falls sharply. However, after annealing the samples at their final diameter the effect of homogenization is leveled out and the critical current in the homogenized samples becomes the same as in the nonhomogenized material. On introducing carbon into the alloys the critical current rises sharply. The current rises particularly so after heat-treating the samples at their final dimensions.
