No one who has taken an introductory physiology course needs to read this chapter. It contains an attempt to explain in words the mathematical model theories of the ionic mechanisms of neural activity. Readers to whom this topic is new are urged to read current textbooks or, even better, the reviews of the pioneers of modern membrane theory, in order to get acquainted with the proper mathematical treatment of the subject.
