Abstract
Indices of tissue capillarity based on numerical ratios have many limitations when used other than for global descriptions. This is in part a result of the most common approaches to the problem of quantification being implicitly based on the Krogh cylinder model. Not only does this use unrealistic (imposed) boundaries but utility of the derived indices are essentially limited to gross averages, being unable to account for the variation in fibre size and/or spatial heterogeneity of fibre types which is found in most striated muscle.
