Abstract
In the last few years I have been trying to explore and develop the psychotherapy of rehabilitation and today offer you some reflections on the place of groups in this psychotherapy. At the present time I am Consultant in charge of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Service in Cambridge, which supports some 350 people permanently damaged by psychiatric disorder, many of them schizophrenic; about 180 live in Fulbourn Hospital and the remainder live in various kinds of sheltered accommodation in the town. My colleagues and I work in a multidisciplinary team and use many of the techniques of Social Therapy (Clark 1974). Although much of our effort goes into providing services — arranging accommodation, fixing jobs, medicating etc. — we are also exploring what it is that doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and others do psychologically to give their clients the courage to try again and to build a new life.
