Allotypes of Light Chains of Rat Immunoglobulins and Their Application to the Study of Antibody Biosynthesis

  • Chapter
Contemporary Topics in Molecular Immunology

Abstract

The study of allotypes of immunoglobulin (Ig) polypeptide chains has thrown considerable light on the structure of antibodies, their biosynthesis, and their genetics. The best-known genetic markers are allotypic determinants of H and L peptide chains from human and rabbit Ig. However, studying genetic regulation of Ig biosynthesis in these species is difficult. Among experimental animals, the most available and genetically thoroughly investigated is the mouse, but Ig genetic markers have been reported only for H chains. The genetics of several dozen highly inbred strains of rats have also been well studied, particularly their Ig, since the recent discovery of their Ig-producing myeloma tumors (Bazin et al., 1973).
