Abstract

Action spectrum studies have provided historic milestones in the identification of key chromophores for biological activity. Perhaps the best early example was the identification of photoreceptors responsible for photosynthetic reactions. Other milestones of special note were Gates’(1930) observation that the absorption maximum peak for DNA was the same as the maximum wavelength for killing bacteria and Stadler’s (1942) discovery that the action spectrum for mutation in maize was the same as the absorption spectrum for DNA.
