Abstract
The enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO), present in high concentrations in neutrophilic granulocytes of many species, has been shown to have a bactericidal effect when combined with hydrogen peroxidase and chloride as cofactors (for a review see1). At present, the exact basis of the myeloperoxidase-mediated killing of bacteria has not yet been elucidated. Both hypochlorous acid (OCl−) and singlet oxygen (1O2) have been designated as the microbicidal agents in this system.
