Abstract
According to the French historian Potonniée,(1) photography is essentially a French discovery. Clearly many of the early developments took place in France, including the work of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce as early as 1816 and of Louis J. M. Daguerre in 1839. On the other hand, Stenger(2) points out that it was a German, Johann Schulze, who was the first (1727) to produce temporary photographic images by wrapping a black paper stencil around a bottle containing silver nitrate. Although the darkening of silver salts was known long before, Schulze appears to be the first to credit the effects to light. Later, in 1777, the Swedish chemist Carl Scheele investigated the darkening of silver chloride at various wavelengths and showed that the compound decomposed with the loss of chlorine.
