Analysis of Gland Secretions of Pentatomoidea (Heteroptera) by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Techniques

Summary

Results of analyses by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry on the semiochemicals of several species of the superfamily Pentatomoidea are given. In addition to the primarily defensive metathoracic gland (MG) the four Acanthosomatidae species studied also possess a pair of active dorsal abdominal exocrine glands (DG1) in the adults. The use of microscale hydrogenations in confirming the identity of the DG1 monoterpenes is illustrated. Two methods of sample collection were used, one involving gland dissection under saline into solvent, followed by injection of the sample into the GC, the other involving trapping the volatiles from the bugs onto a porous polymer, followed by their thermal desorption into the gas Chromatograph.
