Current Status and Recent Advances in the Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry of Ecdysteroids

  • Chapter
Chromatography and Isolation of Insect Hormones and Pheromones

Part of the book series: Chromatographic Society Symposium Series ((CSSS))

Summary

The application of various mass spectrometric techniques to the structure elucidation, detection and quantification of free ecdysteroids and their polar and apolar conjugates is discussed. Three principal areas are considered: (i) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and its complementarity to radioimmunoassay for the screening of ecdysteroids in invertebrates; (ii) the importance of fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry as an adjunct to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the structure elucidation of polar and apolar ecdysteroid conjugates; and (iii) the potential of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for the separation and identification of ecdysteroids.
