Abstract

Laboratoire d’Utilisation de Rayonnement Electromagnetique (LURE) started in the early 1970s through the common will of a group of physicists to use the synchrotron radiation emitted by the Orsay storage rings, Anneau de Collision d’Orsay (ACO) in the UV range, followed in 1976 by Dispositif de Collision sous Igloo (DCI) in the X-ray range. Since 1985, all these machines, storage rings, and linac, are dedicated to the production of synchrotron radiation. In 1987, the first beam was stored in the new ring Super-ACO, an 800-Mev machine designed as a light source (Marin, 1988), and a superconducting wiggler was installed on DCI (Bazin et al., 1988). The performance of these instruments was up to expectations, and the first experimental set-ups are being installed progressively.
