Abstract
The main theorems on the distribution of values of meromorphic functions in the plane have counterparts in the more general setting of analytic mappings between Riemann surfaces. This chapter is devoted to the development of such a general value distribution theory. Principal functions, in particular the estimates I.1.2G to the Main Existence Theorem, provide an essential tool for this work.
