Photolytic Oxidation of Isotactic Polystyrene in Presence of Sulfur Dioxide

Part II. Photolysis Reaction as Function of Light Intensity, Sulfur Dioxide and Oxygen Pressures

  • Conference paper
Photochemistry of Macromolecules

Abstract

The investigation of this photolysis reaction has been continued (see Part I1)), studying the reaction as a function of gas pressures and light intensity. In the first part of this work, an energy of activation of 4. 5Kcal/m was obtained for constant SO2(0. 84mmHg) and oxygen (150mmHg) pressures, respectively. The additional data obtained in this second part permits the formulation of a mechanism for this photolysis reaction, which is in accord with all experimental facts; it is based on a type of Bolland mechanism2) for oxidative degradation in conjunction with the pronounced synergistic action of sulfur dioxide.
