Abstract
Structures appearing in the energy-loss spectra of energetic protons transmitted through thin Al films, such as peaks and shoulders, are studied as a function of both the bombarding energy and the tilt angle of the foil with respect to the beam direction. The results not only confirm previous evidences indicating that the foils contain thickness inhomogeneities, but also suggest that such inhomogeneities can be attributed to a discrete set of thicknesses.

The thickness resolution increases with angle because the energy difference between two adjacent structures, δE(ϕ) = ∆Ej+1 (ϕ) – ∆Ej(ϕ), is proportional to l/cosϕ i/2while the energy width of each structure turns out to be α [l/cosϕ]
