Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to summarize certain studies undertaken in our laboratories which attempt to elucidate the relative physiological importance of the three known JHs as indirectly evidenced by their titers in several life stages of diverse insects, and the biogenetic origin of the carbon skeletons of the structurally unusual homosesquiterpenoids JH I and JH II. The following narrative account of our efforts to answer these questions is a blend of published information, unpublished details, and studies still in progress.
