Results and Possibilities in the Determination of the Rydberg Constant

Atomic Masses and Fundamental Constants 4

Abstract

The importance of the spectra of the hydrogenic atom in the development of physical research is well known. The Sommerfeld—Dirac formula, together with the small quantum-electrodynamical corrections, describes both the positions and the fine structure of the levels exactly. The Rydberg constant, connected with it, has been determined very accurately, and we regard it as one of the fundamental constants of physics.
